![]() ![]() When Digital Anvil was closed, Loose Cannon was picked up by UbiSoft, and was never heard of again. Zurovec and Neumann were working on a game called Loose Cannon at Digital Anvil that was essentially GTA3 5+ years ahead of its time, but the project was terribly managed and wasn't going anywhere, Chris Roberts' input basically amounted to little more than "I don't like blue," and it was a technical beast for the time. ![]() EA did try to make an online sequel, using the widely-distributed Subspace "team," but that never went anywhere, as it turns out that Subspace in giant randomly-generated warehouses with little Crusader guys isn't that great of an idea. Really, the reason this series went away is because they left Origin to join Digital Anvil when the EA merger happened, and without them, there wasn't really anyone to spearhead the series. I met them while they were filming some of the FMV for Crusader: No Regret at a soundstage in Dallas, and was sent to cover it for the Dallas Morning News. The game ultimately shipped on October 31st, 1999.Īnyway, I know/knew Tony Zurovec and Jorg Neumann, two of the leads on Crusader. Oh, and could they add an online multiplayer component while they're at it?Įd Del Castillo, the producer at the time, said the game was at least a year off, and was fired for saying so. Between asking for sequels, they were constantly making ridiculous decrees - Neil demanded that Ultima: Ascension "be a Final Fantasy VII (-level seller) this (1998) September." That would've been 5 months from then. Mattrick had plenty to do with the demise of the company, more than anything I think it was Neil Young and EA's culture at the time. I had an internship at Origin in the summer of 1998, mostly doing menial, uncredited map work on Ultima: Ascension: if you played the game and saw how neatly the river shore tiles were stitched together, then you are familiar with my only real contribution to the game. It looks like The Escapist went down in the middle of me reading this, but perhaps I can add a little to the discussion. ![]()
